Guy Povedano
is our new president since the Round Table Gibraltar AGM on 19th March 2011. Guy’s message was
that Round Table Gibraltar would ‘Go West’ during his presidency. What does
that mean? We’re not quite sure but roundtable.gi decided to look into this
and discovered that ‘Go West’ was a song first performed by the Village People and written by one of the band's lead singers. It is generally understood
as an expression of liberation and maybe it was meant to combine two of the tenets of table - to adapt and improve. Whatever the reasoning it sounds very deep when
compared to last year’s Indian fritter initiative.
Seriously though Guy’s aims
for the year are twofold namely to promote membership and to focus on community
services. Guy is qualified in management and he expects to instil some
discipline into table life, not in order to discourage, but instead to promote teamwork
and productivity. The president wishes to support a couple of local charities during
his term. One is the Cancer Relief ‘Thumbs Up’ Campaign, and the other is Woman In Need. This year Round Table Gibraltar will be arranging several fund raising events which help build up the charitable fund which in turn is the source of funds for all charitable projects. As for social events, these appear on the calendar and include now traditional events with a few exciting extras such as an organised Go-Karting Grand Prix and a visit to a nearby ale brewery.
On the
International front, we are committed to travelling to the IROs’ meeting, the
RTI AGM and of utmost importance is a long overdue visit to our twin table of
Airdrie and District in Scotland.
Round Table
Gibraltar generally meet in the evening on a twice monthly or fortnightly
basis. Our activities vary between ‘business meetings’ where we discuss issues
such as community services, to dinners with guest speakers on topical and local
matters, to activity based meetings such as clay pigeon shooting and bowling as
examples. We also organise a range of social activities for our members, their
wives and families such as short breaks away and children’s xmas parties.
There is
only one Table in Gibraltar at the moment. The council of which double up as
the National Council.
For those
with no knowledge of Gibraltar, we are located at the southern most end of the
Iberian Peninsula overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar, thus at the gateway of
the Mediterranean. Gibraltar is a British overseas territory covering 6.843
square kilometres (2.642 square miles) and sharing a land border with Spain.
